Lettuce Entertain You
Last week we talked about kitchen remodeling. One of the reasons people remodel their kitchens is to make them more conducive to entertaining. Did you ever notice how everyone gravitates toward the kitchen? Whether it’s a family visit or a large party, it always seems so difficult to get people out of the kitchen and into another room. Why? The kitchen is where the action is. It’s where the host and hostess are putting together the delectable goodies being served. It’s where the food and drink originate.
If you want to remodel your kitchen because you entertain a lot, there are a few things to remember. First, the kitchen has to be just as functional when you’re not entertaining. Choose appliances, flooring and cabinetry that will work for you both daily and on special occasions. For example, flooring such as hard wood rather than ceramic tile will be easier to stand on for long periods of time – for both the hosts and the guests. For entertaining, design the kitchen to have clear lines of sight, and add a television on the wall or in an easy-to-see space. Built-in beverage refrigerators and ice makers are also convenience features for party-givers. An island, bar area or peninsula offers a gathering area for guests. If you normally have your parties catered, consider a butler’s pantry for the caterer’s use. Or, if you normally enlist the help of friends or have friends over to cook together, make the kitchen aisles big enough for more than one cook. Most important in a kitchen make-over is your own entertainment style. Communicate it clearly to your custom remodeler and designer, and watch your kitchen become an entertainment room.
